If you haven’t heard, there’s a new Soccer Club in town and it’s called the RCRage Soccer Association. The club was formed to provide training, instruction, and a highly competitive environment for the more serious youth soccer player in the Red Creek area. Our goal is to develop a skilled, dedicated and well-rounded player for the Red Creek Central High School Teams. In the club’s first outing this season they seem to be doing exactly what they have set out to do…WIN!
The club traveled to Geneseo the first week in March 2005 where they entered four youth teams in the tournament from the elementary level right up to the varsity level. Caleb Heslop coaches the U12 Boys and David Gregg coaches the U14 on up through to the U19 teams. The competition was stiff with some heavy hitting teams like Greece Arcadia, Palmyra, Kendall and Batavia just to mention a few.
Some exceptional indoor soccer was played by all the RCRage teams and after the smoke settled, both the RCRage U19 Boys and the RCRage U14 Boys walked away with first place in their divisions. The U19 boys suffered a defeat by Jasper-Troupsberg earlier in the day during regulation play but from that moment on they could not be stopped. The U19 team regrouped and went on to steamroll their competition. Led by Juniors Jeremy March, Ben Reese and Earl Sharkey the boys combined strengths with sophomores Emma Vitale, JR Fisher, Stephen Lang, Billy Stevenson and Andrew Keeling along with freshmen Anthony Roden, Colton Gregg and Devin Reese and last but not least, in the goal, 7th grader Eli Vitale to put on an exhibition for every team that stepped in their way! After suffering the one loss, “the kids really started to play ball,” says Gregg, “they moved the ball with exceptional precision and great patience, and they played a very pretty game.”
The RCRage U14 Boys team cleaned house all day long until they came up against a very strong Holley team in the finals and that’s when things began to get exciting. All day long Goalie Ryon Gould played a very tough net coming up with a seemingly impossible stop after stop each and every time! 8th graders Ryan Fisher, Keyan Scutt, Anthony Losurdo, Drew Knox and Alex Keeling combined with 7th graders Ryon Adam, Kevin Dates, Nathaniel Gregg, Jimmy Slobe, Warren Sutterby, Matt Treby, Trevor Knox and Eli Vitale lead the U14 team into the finals where they had their match of the day! Early on the Holley team took a 1-0 lead on the RCRage and showed they meant business. The RCRage team quickly responded right back making it a 1-1 game. With seven minutes left in the match Ryan Fisher hit the top corner of the net making it a 2-1 match. The Holley team was not going to lie down and they knew on who’s foot they needed to put the ball. A quick pass was delivered to Varsity superstar Julio Mendoza’s younger brother. The younger Mendoza showed what lies ahead in his career as he effortlessly sliced and diced through two RCRage defenders to tie the game 2-2. When the final whistle blew the game was tied 2 all. Sudden death overtime is the highlight of any tournament match and this was no different. Sudden Death overtime is played for 5 minutes and after each minute winds down, both teams have to strip off one player. For the RCRage, they started with Ryan Fisher, Ryon Adam, Matt Treby and Eli Vitale on the field. Ryon Gould played the net. After the first minute of play the match was still tied and the RCRage removed Matt Treby from the lineup and made one substitution change with Nathaniel Gregg coming in for Ryan Fisher. The game restarted and Nathaniel Gregg collected a sharp pass from Ryon Adam. Gregg spun on the trap with a nice step over fake and pushed the ball to his right striking a frozen rope in the bottom right hand side of the net sealing the victory. The RCRage U14 boys have now won the Geneseo tournament for three years in a row.
The U12 team was comprised of Caleb Gregg, Steven Hendricks, Nicholas Hollander, Trevor Johnson, Trevor Knox, Jared Longley, Jordan Mullen, Zoe Mullen, Trentin Reese, Kailey Salo, Jason Sholes, Mack Stanley, Evan Sutterby and Dylan Williams.
The U16 Team was comprised of Emma Vitale, Colton Gregg, JR Fisher, Stephen Lang, Jordan Lang, Anthony Roden, Billy Stevenson, Andrew Keeling, Brian March, Ryan Fisher, Keyan Scutt, Ryan Gould, Ryon Adam, Eli Vitale, Nathaniel Gregg and Kevin Dates.
“All four teams performed extremely well” said Gregg. “We love taking the kids to different places to play where they get to see some different teams and different competition. We couldn’t be prouder of all the kids!”
